NYC.gov reports that in January the NYC Municipal Identification Cards will be available to all NYC residents simply produce proof of residency and identity.

Confidentiality will be protected

The card does not provide legal status

No city agency offering services can ask of your legal status

The ID Card is Free

With this ID Card holders will receive free membership to 33 of the New York City’s cultural institutions such as museums, zoos and botanical gardens

Having this card is not a requirement- but It could be a benefit to those who need proof of Identification .
