Starting July 4th Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Air Field Camp Grounds will have 52 campsite with another 38 planned for next year. The goal according to the Secretary of the Interior is to turn the site into the nations’ largest urban campground with over 600 campsites.
Floyd Bennett Field New York city’s first municipal airport was created by connecting Barren Island to some smaller marsh islands and filling the channels in. The old airport was named for famed aviator Floyd Bennett who was also a Brooklyn resident. It was officially opened on May 23rd, 1931 though no longer used as an operational airfield the New York Police Department flies helicopters from its base. The field has 57,800 acres and ownership is split between the Feds and the City of New York.
Access to the field is only a metro card away- the Q35 bus stops at the field.
The park will be hosting several Free monthly events titled “Explore The Urban Outback” . Rangers will be teaching camping basics and other important tips.
